Liposuction is an Outpatient Procedure
The first thing to understand about liposuction with regard to your recovery is that it is an outpatient procedure. This means you will be sent home on the same day of your surgery, and the majority of your recovery will take place there, guided by specific instructions from your doctor.
Expect Some Swelling and Discomfort
Due to the nature of the liposuction procedure, you can expect some swelling and soreness. However, a compression garment is used to help control the swelling and to ensure the skin adapts to the new shape of the body as you heal. You may also require small, temporary drains to help remove any excess blood or fluid.
Expect to Take Time Off
Typically, the days immediately following your liposuction procedure may be the most uncomfortable. However, your compression garment and pain medication should help alleviate some of your symptoms. In most cases, it is advised for patients to take one to two weeks off work. The amount of time needed to recover will vary depending on the patient and the severity of the procedure.
After roughly one month, and if you are healing according to plan, you may be able to incorporate some light exercise, which you can gradually increase. After three months, you will be able to fully appreciate the results of your procedure.
