Microneedling in Columbus, OH

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic medical procedure for all skin types. This treatment helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Microneedling can be used to treat several different skin concerns such as fine lines or wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, scars, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and uneven skin textures.

Tiny, controlled needles are embedded into the microneedling device. Small micro-injuries are then created when the microneedling device stamps the top layers of the skin. The length of the needles can be changed depending on the area being treated. The punctures on the top skin layer allow serums to reach the deeper layers of the dermis to promote new cell growth and regeneration.

Microneedling sessions typically take an hour depending on the size of the treatment area.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling can help enhance the appearance of your skin and texture. It helps minimize acne scars, enlarged pores, pigmentation issues, rough skin, uneven skin tone, stretch marks, dull skin, and mild scars. It is a quick treatment that is safe to use and has minimal aftercare management.

Who is a Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is safe for almost any patient. Patients who wish to achieve smoother, firmer skin, require treatment for wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, or post-surgery scars are ideal candidates. You may not be a candidate if you have the following:

  • Active Acne
  • Eczema, psoriasis
  • Raised Keloid Scars
  • Rosacea
  • Skin Cancer
  • Actinic keratosis, other non-melanoma & melanoma skin cancers
  • Broken or irritated skin (e.g., hives or dermatitis)
  • Cold sores (fever blisters) or shingles
  • Open sores or lesions
  • If you received a neurotoxin within the last 7 days or dermal fillers within the last 28 days.

A consultation with Dr. DePerro or our Nurse Practitioner is required to determine if this treatment is right for your skin type.

How is Microneedling Performed?

The treatment area is cleansed with an appropriate skin cleanser. Then a numbing agent is placed on the treatment area prior to needling. Once the patient is numb, the numbing is wiped off and the treatment area is cleansed and prepped for microneedling. The provider will then move the microneedling device in a stamping pattern over your skin to create microscopic puncture sites. The puncture sites will close within 3-5 minutes (enough time to allow new collagen to be stimulated). You may experience some discomfort over sensitive areas of the face (e.g., around the eyes).

Is there any Downtime with Microneedling?

Day 1-3: Erythema (comparable to a moderate sunburn) and minor swelling. The skin may be tight and dry post-procedure.  Slight skin flaking is normal. After the treatment, the patient may experience minor pinpoint bleeding. After day 2 the erythema and inflammation begin to subside. On Day 3 the patient will notice the erythema turn to a pink color and it will subside over the next 2-3 days.

It is highly recommended that you wear daily SPF 30 or higher on the treatment areas.  Avoid applying makeup on the treatment areas for the first 24 hours.

What is the recommended treatment regimen?

We suggest receiving a treatment every 3-4 weeks for the next 4-6 months to see results.  However, every microneedling procedure regimen is different.  It may take up to 90 days to see full collagen remodeling.
