How to Prepare for a Breast Augmentation

Sep 25, 2018

A breast augmentation surgery can be an exciting and, potentially life-changing day. After years of dissatisfaction with your breasts, you will finally get the body of your dreams. As with any big event, you’ll want to make sure you are fully ready. Curious about how to prepare for a breast augmentation? Here is what we recommend.

Arrange for Sufficient Care

After your procedure, you will not be able to do very much on your own. As a result, you will want to make sure you have the following in place and ready to go:

  • Someone to drive you home
  • Someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours after the procedure
  • Someone to care for children or pets, if that applies

Avoid Alcohol and Nicotine

In the weeks prior to your appointment, you will want to make sure your body is well hydrated, so as to aid the healing process. Alcohol is a blood thinner, which could lead to bruises and a longer healing time. So it is wise to avoid this for best results.

Smoking can also make the recovery process longer and could increase the chance of potential side effects or unwanted complications. If you smoke but have been considering a breast augmentation, this could be your chance to kick the habit for good.

Do Not Take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or Herbal Supplements

Both aspirin and ibuprofen will make it more difficult for the body to properly clot blood. Should you need to relieve pain, acetaminophen (also known as Tylenol) is a safer choice. As for herbal supplements, they can, unfortunately, have a negative interaction with the anesthesia. So, it is best to stop any herbal supplementation as you prepare for your breast augmentation.

Get Your Rest and Get Ready

Although you may be excited about the upcoming big day, it is important to make sure you are well rested before your surgery. On the morning of the procedure, be sure to not eat anything eight hours before your appointment. We advise patients to wash their hair and body, dress in comfortable, loose clothing–especially shirts with a front closure–and to leave any jewelry at home.
